Knowing Your Niche In 2019

Finding your “niche” can prove to be challenging and intimidating. But in reality, is it? What is a niche? Can you only have one, or many niches? Can your niche change as you grow and evolve over time? Are we all just overthinking the idea of finding a niche, when in reality, it’s quite simple?

I thought, what better way to get the answers I needed, than to simply interview people to ask their thoughts and opinions on the matter.

The three questions I asked each individual were:

  1. What is your definition of a “niche”?
  2. If you have one, what do you think is your “niche” in life?
  3. And what does having a “niche” mean to you, if anything?

Here are some of the responses:

“I think my niche is managing to find the positive in (almost) all situations. Having a niche means finding the place where you feel most comfortable or confident in a situation or environment.”

-McKenzie Butler

“I think my niche would be what I’m most passionate about, and then striving to become the best I can at it by learning as much as I can about whatever: shoes, sales, cooking, dance … that’s how I thrive!”

-Jamie Samel

“I think of “niche” as your purpose in life or something you were meant to do. My niche in life is to just spread kindness even when kindness isn’t presented. I can show kindness by going the extra mile to show I care. I think having a niche is important because it’s almost like a little banner that’s constantly hung up in your head/heart. You have these banners hanging up in the back your mind and that’s the reminder to keep true to yourself and to keep pushing yourself even though it may be hard.”

-Kylie Nichelle

“I think having a niche is genuinely just about finding people who make you happy and who bring out the best in you. My niche is so diverse with different personalities and interests. I love every single person in my friend group for who they are, and for allowing our differences to bring out aspects of one another we couldn’t explore on our own. I don’t think there’s a secret to finding the right “niche” that fits you. It’s all about finding people who are loyal to you, and without a doubt, make you the happiest version of yourself.”

-Kenzie Karnes

After reading through the replies, I realized there is no ONE niche. It’s different for everyone. I also discovered a few patterns that helped me form a list of things to think about when discovering your niche.

  1. Try to identify your passions
  2. Be proactive in working toward that which makes you happy
  3. Be open to new ideas

A new year is often time for contemplation about one’s life and one’s direction. It can be a turning point. The perfect time for self-examination and a time to identify where we fit into this life. Entering 2019 and not knowing who you are or what you want to do in life can be nerve-wracking, but it doesn’t have to be! Trying to discover my “niche,” my calling in life, has helped me examine my dreams and my expectations, and has given me strength to step forward into the new year.

2019 is the perfect time to find your niche. Choose to be whoever you want to be. Get out of your conformity zone. Take care of your health. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Laugh. Cry. Spread positivity. Whether you’re the badass Rocker-Chic girl, or the trendy Girl-Next-Door, accept that you’re unique and go your own direction. But, don’t forget to look fashionable while doing it!
